Mom SpeakHealthy Snacks

What are some of your favorite ideas for healthy after-school snacks for your kids?

"Kids will eat anything if they can help you make it. We use different shaped ice-cube trays (hearts, stars, etc.) that you can fill with fruit juice and make either frozen treats or colorful ice cubes to put in water."

Jodi, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota

"My daughter is an excellent ‘sprinkler.’ Instead of using those sprinkling skills to decorate cookies, we let her ‘decorate’ a bowl of warm instant oatmeal. She chooses a bit of shredded coconut, dried fruit and a variety of nuts. When she’s done, it’s so colorful and naturally sweet, she doesn’t miss the syrup or brown sugar."

Kathy, Des Moines, Iowa

"One of my kids’ favorite after schools snacks is popcorn with parmesan cheese sprinkled over the top."

Sharon, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma

"I give my son is individual cups of sweet potato or pumpkin. I add a little brown sugar, microwave and stir to get a smooth texture, and serve it up as pudding. He really thinks that's what he's eating."

Chrissy, Des Moines, Iowa

"My kids spread refried beans on a whole-wheat tortillas, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top, zap it in the microwave for about 15 seconds, then roll it up like a wrap. They make them without my help, and the wraps provided them with the energy to get through the afternoon. My daughter likes to put a little salsa on hers before zapping it, adding a little boost of antioxidants as well. As a busy, single, working-mom, I really appreciated healthy things my kids could make on their own and that didn't leave a big mess in the kitchen for me to clean up."

Teri, Federal Way, Washington

"Something I do to get the kids to try different kids of fruit is to cut oranges, pineapple, kiwi and any other kinds of fruit into bite size pieces and then skewer them onto wooden shish kabob sticks. Put them into the refrigerator for awhile so all the tastes kind of mix together. The kids like taking them off the stick, with adult supervision."

Sue, Algona, Iowa

"I like to give my girls caramel rice cakes with peanut butter. It gives them the boost they need to get their homework done before dinner!"

Denise, Pottstown, Pennsylvania
