Professor Mario de Camargo Maranhão is the immediate Past-President of the World Heart Federation. He was President at a time when the World Heart Federation was restructuring to create a high profile and better visibility both within the organization and for its target audiences, including its members and sponsors, the global population, governments, health associations and official entities.
His priorities during his term of office included:
- The success of the World Heart and Stroke Forum.
- The development of the World Heart Day, in conjunction with the World Health Organization and UNESCO.
- Effective action toward smoking control, in partnership with the World Health Organization, and promoting healthy nutrition and physical activity.
- The organization of regional events in China, Middle East, Central America and the Caribbean.
Since 1972, Professor Maranhão has been an active member of various organizations, such as the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the French, Portuguese and Spanish Societies of Cardiology.
Professor Maranhão is also a member of many cardiological associations in Brazil and Latin America. One of his greatest achievements was the organization of the 13th World Congress of Cardiology, Rio-1998, well attended by more than 15,000 cardiologists, and the Joint Scientific Symposia with the ACC, the AHA and the European Society of Cardiology during their annual meetings with the Interamerican Society of Cardiology. These meetings were presided over by Professor Maranhão during 1989-1993.
Professor Maranhão has been Professor of Cardiology at the Evangelic School of Medicine and Hospital in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, for the last 30 years where he is also a Professor of Cardiology and Head of the Cardiovascular Department. He graduated in Medicine in 1961 from the Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba in Brazil, and did his post-graduate training in Cardiology at the Clinic Hospital of the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo. He holds three Fellowships from the University of Sorbonne in Paris, France, from the Hanemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, and from the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Professor Maranhão is a member of the editorial board of Brazilian, European and American journals and is the author and co-author of several articles presented at national and international seminars. He is also editor and co-editor of various books such as Beta Blockers, published in 1983 in English, German and Spanish.
Professor Maranhão is Brazilian and lives in Curitiba in the south of Brazil with his wife and son. He is fluent in English French, Spanish and Portuguese languages.
